SSC CHSL 2026 Vacancies – Pending Notification

The CHSL 2026 vacancy figure will be in Para 2.1 of the Notice of Advertisement (when released). SSC typically publishes a tentative total at notification, then a post-wise breakdown a few weeks later under ssc.gov.in → For Candidates → Tentative Vacancy. For reference, CHSL 2025 declared 3,131 tentative vacancies.

Note: CHSL vacancy distribution can shift year-on-year. CHSL 2023 saw a sharp dip (~1,600) because LDC posts were minimal that year. We will mirror the SSC post-wise table on this page within hours of release.

SSC CHSL 2026 Exam Pattern (Expected, based on CHSL 2025)

Tier-I (Computer Based Examination)

Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer. Medium: English, Hindi and 14 regional languages for Sections II / III / IV (English Language is in English only). Tier-I is qualifying for Tier-II; final merit comes from Tier-II.

Tier-II (Computer Based Examination + Skill / Typing Test)

Mandatory to qualify all sections of Tier-II (Para 17.5 of CHSL 2025). Merit list is based on Section-I + Section-II marks only, subject to clearing Section-III (CKT) and Section-IV (Skill / Typing) qualifying standards (Para 17.10).

CHSL 2025 had no sectional timer – the 60-minute Tier-I was a free-movement paper. However, SSC introduced a 15-minute sectional timer in CGL 2026 Tier-I (Para 13.8). It's reasonable to expect the same change in CHSL 2026, but the official notification has not yet confirmed it. est

Nationality

Indian citizen, Nepali / Bhutanese subject, Tibetan refugee (entered India before 01-01-1962), or a person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan / Burma / Sri Lanka / East-African countries with the intent of permanently settling in India.

Educational Qualification (Para 8 of CHSL 2025)

• DEO / DEO Grade "A" in Ministry of Consumer Affairs (Food & Public Distribution), Ministry of Culture and SSC: 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognised Board or equivalent.
• LDC / JSA and DEO / DEO Grade "A" (except posts above): 12th Standard or equivalent from any stream, recognised Board / University.
• Candidates appearing in 12th can also apply; must possess EQ on or before the cut-off date (expected 01-01-2027).

About SSC CHSL 2026

The Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination, 2026 is the Staff Selection Commission's annual recruitment for Group "C" posts of Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant (LDC / JSA), Data Entry Operator (DEO) and DEO Grade "A" across various Ministries, Departments, Constitutional Bodies, Statutory Bodies and Tribunals of the Government of India. The notification has not yet been released; the latest released cycle is CHSL 2025 (Notice F. No. HQ-C1102/9/2025-C-1, dated 23 June 2025) with 3,131 tentative vacancies.

The selection scheme stays two-tier and computer-based: Tier-I (qualifying, 100 Q × 2 = 200 marks, 60 min) and Tier-II (final merit) which is conducted in two sessions on the same day – Session-I for the three written sections (Math + Reasoning, English + GA, Computer Knowledge Test) and Session-II for the Skill Test / Typing Test. Section-III (CKT) and Section-IV (Skill / Typing) are qualifying in nature; merit is determined by Section-I + Section-II of Tier-II only.

Posts under CHSL go to a wide spread of Government offices – CAG, MEA, Cabinet Secretariat, Department of Posts, CBIC, CBDT, Ministry of Defence, Election Commission, the various armed-forces headquarters, and other Indenting Ministries / Departments. Pay scales fall under the 7th CPC: Pay Level-2 (₹19,900–63,200) for LDC / JSA, Pay Level-4 (₹25,500–81,100) for DEO / DEO Grade "A", and Pay Level-5 (₹29,200–92,300) for selected DEO posts.

Career Path After SSC CHSL – Promotions, MACP, Transfers

Joining the Central Government through SSC CHSL is the beginning of a 35-40 year career arc with predictable promotional milestones. The trajectory depends on the post you join, the cadre / ministry, and your performance, but the broad pattern is well documented.

LDC / JSA promotion path

An LDC / JSA joins at Pay Level-2 (₹19,900 basic) in a Central Government office – typically the Central Secretariat, a ministry, or a subordinate office. The first promotion is to Upper Division Clerk (UDC) at Pay Level-4 after 5-8 years through the departmental promotion committee. After UDC, the next rung is Assistant Section Officer (ASO) at Pay Level-7, which is typically achieved through a limited departmental competitive examination after 8-10 years of UDC service. Senior officers can then move to Section Officer (Level-8), Under Secretary (Level-11), Deputy Secretary (Level-12) and beyond – the path to Joint Secretary (Level-14) is possible for the most successful officers over a 25-30 year career. The MACP (Modified Assured Career Progression) scheme guarantees at least three financial upgradations at 10, 20 and 30 years of service even if functional promotions don't happen.

DEO / DEO Grade A promotion path

A Data Entry Operator joins at Pay Level-4 or 5. The first promotion is to Senior DEO / Computer Operator (Level-6 or 7), typically after 5-7 years. In departments like CBIC or CBDT, DEOs can be deputed to Tax Assistant / Auditor / Accountant cadres which open up the CGL-equivalent promotional ladder. Inside specialised departments (M/o Consumer Affairs, M/o Culture, SSC HQ itself), DEOs reach mid-cadre supervisory roles. MACP applies on the same 10/20/30 year basis.

Transfers and posting policies

Most CHSL posts are notionally "All India transferable", but in practice transfers are limited by cadre size. LDC / JSA posts inside the Central Secretariat Stenographers' Service (CSSS) are Delhi-based with occasional ex-cadre stints. Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant in Department of Posts have circle-based postings (UP Circle, Delhi Circle, Tamil Nadu Circle, etc.) and transfers are usually within the circle. DEO postings in CBIC / CBDT can involve all-India movement. The 7th CPC introduced a uniform Transport Allowance + Children Education Allowance structure that travels with you, so the financial impact of transfers is largely neutralised.

SSC CHSL 2026 Preparation Strategy – Tier-wise

Tier-I (60 minutes, 200 marks) – the qualifying gate

Tier-I is qualifying only; the actual merit comes from Tier-II. But Tier-I is also the gate that filters out 90% of applicants, so a strong Tier-I score gives you a comfortable shortlist. Aim for 140+ out of 200 for the UR cut-off and 160+ for a clean clearance. Section-wise time-budget for 60 minutes: 12 min English (lowest difficulty, fastest), 13 min General Awareness, 18 min Quantitative Aptitude, 17 min Reasoning. If SSC introduces a 15-minute sectional timer in CHSL 2026 (as CGL 2026 did), the per-section time becomes hard-capped at 15 minutes; practice with mock tests under this constraint.

Section-wise focus:

• English Language (50 marks): Vocabulary (synonyms / antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms), grammar (spot the error, sentence improvement), reading comprehension, cloze test. The CHSL English paper is significantly easier than CGL – aim for 22+ correct out of 25.
• General Intelligence (50 marks): Coding-decoding, series (number / letter / mixed), analogy, classification, mirror images, dice / cube, blood relations, syllogism, statement & conclusion. The most predictable section – 23+ correct is achievable with 4-6 weeks of focused practice.
• Quantitative Aptitude (50 marks): Arithmetic (percentage, profit-loss, time-distance, time-work, SI / CI), algebra basics, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, statistics (charts). Tougher section for non-Maths backgrounds – build NCERT 6-10 fundamentals first, then move to RS Aggarwal / Rakesh Yadav practice sets. Aim for 18-20 correct.
• General Awareness (50 marks): Static GK (history, polity, geography, economics, science), current affairs (last 8-10 months pre-exam), India + world. Cover NCERT Class 6-10 social science, Lucent's General Knowledge, daily current-affairs from a reliable source. Aim for 20+ correct.

Tier-II (135 min Session-I + Session-II) – the merit decider

Tier-II is where the final merit is computed. Section-I (Math + Reasoning) and Section-II (English + GA) carry 60 questions each at 3 marks = 180 marks per section. Section-III (CKT) and Section-IV (Skill / Typing) are qualifying only. The 1-mark negative marking per wrong answer in Sections I–III is steep – attempt only what you're confident on. Realistic Tier-II target for UR: 320+ out of 360 (Section-I + Section-II combined). For LDC / JSA finishers, Typing Test at 35 wpm English (or 30 wpm Hindi) needs 4-6 weeks of dedicated typing-software practice (10fastfingers, TypingMaster). For DEO finishers, Skill Test demands 8,000 key depressions per hour speed with under-7% error rate.

Common mistakes candidates make

• Over-attempting in Tier-II. 1-mark negative is brutal. Don't guess; skip if not sure.
• Ignoring Section-III (Computer Knowledge Test). It's qualifying but you must clear it. 2 weeks of basic computer fundamentals (MS Office, hardware, internet, security) is enough.
• Not practising the Typing Test on the actual keyboard layout. SSC uses the standard QWERTY layout in English; for Hindi, both Mangal (Inscript) and Krutidev fonts are commonly available – choose at application stage and don't switch.
• Selecting incompatible post preferences. If you don't have 12th in Science with Mathematics, don't choose DEO in M/o Consumer Affairs / Culture / SSC – the application will be rejected at DV.
• Missing the Online Option Form deadline. Post preferences are taken in a short window before final result; if you don't submit, you're out of consideration even if you cleared Tier-II.

SSC CHSL 2026 Reservation Categories Explained

SSC follows the Central Government reservation policy as determined by the Indenting Ministries / Departments. The Commission itself does not decide vacancy numbers by category – it implements what the User Departments report. Reservation percentages broadly follow the Central pattern: 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC (non-creamy layer), 10% for EWS, with 4% horizontal reservation for PwBD (1% each for blindness / low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability incl. cerebral palsy / leprosy cured / dwarfism / acid attack victims / muscular dystrophy, and multiple disabilities) and 10% horizontal reservation for Ex-Servicemen (ESM) for Group "C" posts.

Category certificate requirements

• SC / ST: Certificate from the prescribed authority (Tehsildar / SDM / DM or equivalent) in the format at Annexure-V of the Notification.
• OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): NCL certificate issued in the last 3 financial years from the prescribed authority. Income limit ₹8 lakh per annum (excluding salary and agriculture).
• EWS: Certificate from a competent authority confirming family income below ₹8 lakh and asset criteria.
• PwBD: Certificate from a duly empanelled hospital / medical board confirming benchmark disability (≥40%) as per the RPwD Act, 2016.
• ESM: Discharge certificate from Armed Forces. Reservation applies only to Group "C" posts (Para 3.3 of CHSL 2025).

Age relaxation – combined effect

Maximum cumulative age relaxation: SC/ST 5 + ESM 3 = 8 years; OBC 3 + ESM 3 = 6 years; PwBD-OBC = 13 years (10 + 3); PwBD-SC/ST = 15 years (10 + 5). PwBD candidates with locomotor disability of both arms or muscular dystrophy who use scribe get an additional 20 minutes per hour compensatory time and a 50% larger font size on screen. Female candidates have no age relaxation but enjoy fee exemption and reservation under PwBD / SC / ST / OBC verticals where applicable.

About SSC CHSL – History, Scale, Significance

The Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination has been conducted by the Staff Selection Commission since 2010, when it replaced the older Lower Division Grade Examination and the Data Entry Operators Examination.
