Marking scheme and Tier-I exam pattern (+2 / −0.50)

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
General Intelligence & Reasoning255015 min
General Awareness255015 min
Quantitative Aptitude255015 min
English Comprehension255015 min
Total10020060 min

+2 for a correct answer, −0.50 for a wrong answer, 0 for an unattempted question. Raw marks = (Correct × 2) − (Wrong × 0.50). Example: 75 correct and 15 wrong = 150 − 7.50 = 142.50 / 200. Four wrong answers cancel one correct answer.

Sectional timer: 15 minutes per section. Scribe-eligible candidates get 1 hour 20 minutes (20 minutes per section). Questions are in English and Hindi, except English Comprehension.

Normalisation: raw marks vs normalised marks

Tier-I is held in many shifts, so SSC normalises the marks (notification para 13.2). Merit and cut-offs use normalised scores, not the raw marks in your response sheet. SSC's method, separately for each subject:

  1. Percentile in your shift: the share of candidates in your shift who scored the same as you or less.
  2. Match across shifts: the raw score at the same percentile in every other shift.
  3. Average: your normalised score is the average of those matched raw scores.

So marks can go up or down. In a hard shift a raw score usually rises; in an easy shift it usually falls. Only SSC publishes normalised marks, after the result.

*Normalised marks out of 200, posts other than JSO and Statistical Investigator, from SSC's revised CGL 2025 Tier-I result (as reported by Careers360, 14 January 2026). SSC sets separate cut-offs for JSO/SI and for AAO/Assistant Accounts Officer.

Minimum qualifying marks are floors, not the expected cut-off; the Tier-II shortlist cut-off is much higher. QMaths does not publish a predicted 2026 cut-off. Note that CGL 2025 Tier-I had no sectional timer.

When will the SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 answer key come?▸
SSC has not announced a date. It releases the tentative key after the Tier-I exams end, and its Tier-I schedule runs to 30 October 2026. For reference, the CGL 2025 Tier-I key came out on 16 October 2025, after the last Tier-I sitting (as reported by PW and Jagran Josh). Check ssc.gov.in or this page.
How to download the SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 response sheet?▸
Open the answer-key notice on ssc.gov.in, click the candidate login link, log in with your Registration Number and password, and open your response sheet. Save it with the browser's Print, then Save as PDF, before SSC closes the window. Paste the same page's URL into the calculator on this page for your marks.
How to calculate SSC CGL Tier 1 marks using answer key?▸
Copy your response sheet URL from the SSC login and paste it into the QMaths calculator on this page. It reads your answers, applies the marking scheme (+2 for correct, -0.50 for wrong, 0 for unattempted) and shows your section-wise and total raw marks.
What is the marking scheme for SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1?▸
Each correct answer carries +2 marks and each wrong answer carries -0.50 marks. Unattempted questions carry 0. There are 100 questions for 200 marks: four sections of 25 questions (50 marks) each.
Is negative marking applicable in SSC CGL Tier 1?▸
Yes. 0.50 marks are deducted for every wrong answer (notification para 13.8.2), which is one-fourth of the 2 marks for a correct answer. There is no deduction for unattempted questions.
Is there a sectional timer in SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1?▸
Yes. The 60-minute paper has a sectional timer of 15 minutes for each subject (para 13.8). Candidates eligible for a scribe get 1 hour 20 minutes, with 20 minutes per subject.
What is the objection fee for the CGL 2026 Tier 1 answer key?▸
The CGL 2026 notification (para 13.3) says representations against the tentative answer keys are submitted online on payment of Rs 100 per question, which is non-refundable.
What are the minimum qualifying marks in SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1?▸
As per para 16.1 of the notification: UR 30% (60 of 200), OBC/EWS 25% (50 of 200), all other categories 20% (40 of 200). These are minimums; the actual Tier-II shortlist cut-off is decided category-wise and is much higher.
What was the SSC CGL 2025 Tier 1 cut-off?▸
For posts other than JSO and Statistical Investigator, the revised CGL 2025 Tier-I cut-offs (normalised, out of 200) were UR 136.40, OBC 130.37, EWS 127.42, SC 115.03 and ST 106.39. SSC fixes separate cut-offs for JSO/SI and for AAO/Assistant Accounts Officer.
How many vacancies are there in SSC CGL 2026?▸
10,731 tentative vacancies as per SSC's notice dated 24.09.2026: UR 4,412, OBC 2,772, EWS 1,028, SC 1,715 and ST 804 (373 ESM posts are included in these). The May 2026 notification had about 12,256. Final vacancies can change.
What is normalization in SSC CGL?▸
Because Tier-I is held in many shifts, SSC normalises the marks using the procedure in its notice dated 02-06-2025 (notification para 13.2). Normalised scores, not raw marks, are used for merit and cut-offs.
Will marks increase after normalisation in SSC CGL?▸
They can go up or down. SSC finds your percentile in your own shift, matches it to the raw scores at the same percentile in every shift and takes the average. In a hard shift a raw score usually rises; in an easy shift it usually falls.
How can I see my normalised marks in SSC CGL?▸
Normalised marks are not shown in the response sheet. Only SSC publishes them, after the Tier-I result. The QMaths calculator shows raw marks only.
What is the SSC CGL 2026 expected cut off for Tier 1?▸
SSC has not announced it and QMaths does not publish a predicted figure. Last year's official guide: CGL 2025 Tier-I cut-offs for posts other than JSO/SI were UR 136.40, OBC 130.37, EWS 127.42, SC 115.03 and ST 106.39 (normalised, out of 200). The 2026 cut-off depends on vacancies, candidates, shift difficulty and category, and the 2026 paper has a sectional timer that 2025 did not.
Is 120 a good score in SSC CGL Tier 1?▸
Compared with CGL 2025 (other posts), a normalised 120 would have been below the UR, OBC and EWS cut-offs and above the SC and ST cut-offs. Your raw marks can change after normalisation, so use this only as a rough check, and see your category rank in the calculator.
When is the SSC CGL 2026 Tier 2 exam?▸
The notification gives December 2026 as the tentative month for Tier-II. SSC will announce exact dates in a separate notice. Only candidates shortlisted from Tier-I can appear.
Is there a Tier 3 in SSC CGL 2026?▸
No. CGL 2026 has Tier-I (qualifying), Tier-II (final merit) and Document Verification.
Are Tier 1 marks added to the SSC CGL final merit?▸
No. Tier-I is used to shortlist candidates for Tier-II. The final merit list is prepared on Tier-II performance only (notification para 16.10).
How accurate is the rank prediction on QMaths?▸
The rank compares your raw score with candidates who checked their score on QMaths. It becomes more useful as more candidates check, but it is not an official rank and does not use SSC's normalised scores.
Can I check my SSC CGL score for free?▸
Yes. The QMaths score calculator is free. No login, signup or payment is required.
Can I download my scorecard?▸
Yes. After calculation you can save your scorecard as an image or download the question paper as a PDF.
Is QMaths affiliated with SSC?▸
No. QMaths is an independent educational platform and is not affiliated with SSC or any government body. Official answer keys, marks and results are issued only by SSC.
